If you feel trapped by depression, anxiety, stress, or emotional pain, past experiences can be what lies underneath. Challenges are common as unresolved trauma affects daily functioning, decision-making, and relationships. EMDR is a research-based treatment which has shown effectiveness with PTSD and several other mental health struggles. This approach offers a path to healing as it helps the brain process difficult memories and reduce their emotional weight. As a structured, evidence-based method, it helps individuals move forward with greater clarity and resilience.

What Is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapy protocol that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR uses guided eye movements or other bilateral stimulation to help the nervous system heal from trauma. This process allows memories that once felt overwhelming to lose their emotional charge.
The therapy is structured in phases, beginning with history-taking and preparation ("preparation/phase 2" consists of the layering of emotion regulation strategies before processing begins), followed by the reprocessing of traumatic memories, and ending with integration and closure. This method helps the brain "unstick" memories that cause emotional distress, allowing individuals to experience relief and improve overall functioning.
Who Can Benefit from EMDR Therapy?
EMDR therapy is widely used to support people dealing with:
Anxiety and panic attacks
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Relationship difficulties
Low self-esteem
Stressful life changes
Grief and loss
Depression
Many people do not realize that trauma can affect them in subtle ways. You might benefit from EMDR therapy if you notice:
Feeling overwhelmed by emotions and/or memories
Difficulty trusting others
Avoidance of specific places or conversations
Big/unmanageable reactions to stress or conflict
Persistent negative beliefs about yourself
Trouble feeling safe or calm
These reactions often come from the nervous system trying to protect you, even if the reactions no longer serve you well.
How EMDR Therapy Supports Healing
During sessions, the individual focuses on a specific memory while following the therapist’s hand movements or other back-and-forth stimuli (hand buzzies, tapping etc.). Trained or certified EMDR therapists must possess the skills needed to properly guide individuals through EMDR protocols. It is important for the therapist to ensure the client feels able to speak out and ask to pause processing as needed. It is also important for the therapist to ensure the individual stays within their window of tolerance.
**Please ensure your EMDR therapist is properly trained and/or certified in this modality.
Go with your gut on this. Ask for credentials.
Processing encourages your brain to integrate the memory in a way that feels less distressing. Over time, this can lead to:
Reduced emotional pain linked to trauma
Improved ability to manage stress and anxiety
Greater emotional clarity and resilience
Enhanced self-esteem and confidence
What to Expect in an EMDR Session
EMDR therapy usually takes place over several sessions. The first few appointments focus on building trust and preparing you for the process. Your therapist will explain how EMDR works and teach you techniques to manage emotional distress.
During the reprocessing phase, you will recall traumatic memories while following bilateral stimulation. After processing, you will notice changes in how you feel about those memories.
Sessions end with grounding techniques (eg. calm place, container, other appropriate strategies) to help put things back in place before leaving the session.

The Impact of EMDR Therapy on Long-Term Healing
Research shows that EMDR therapy can lead to lasting changes in how the brain processes trauma. Many clients report feeling more in control of their emotions and better able to handle stress. This therapy can also improve relationships by reducing triggers and emotional reactivity.
By addressing the root causes of emotional pain, EMDR helps individuals build strength and resilience. It supports not just symptom relief, but personal growth.
If you would like to explore EMDR, please reach out. I am trained to conduct EMDR sessions both in-person and via video platforms. I can offer sessions to residents of BC, along with direct billing to many providers, including CVAP, FNHA, autism funding, Jordan's Principle, Greenshield, Sunlife, and more.
